Rama Messinger – Best Actress
In a crumbling old house live Rita – a loud-mouthed widow, factory worker, and lover of men and alcohol – and her introvert daughter Sheshe. Sheshe prefers to lock herself in her room and listen to her beloved late father’s old records, performing brilliant vocal impersonations of Esther Ofarim, Chava Alberstein, Ilanit, Liza Minnelli, Edith Piaf and others.
Meni Keren-Paz, a failed talent agent whom Rita is trying to seduce, happens to overhear Sheshe singing and decides to make her into a star. Sheshe, meanwhile, is developing a relationship with a shy, awkward telephone repairman. While her mother is determined to exploit her talent to win Meni’s love, Sheshe fights for her right to remain a “little voice” and live life on her own terms.
Jim Cartwright’s Little Voice was a major success in London, winning the prestigious “Comedy of the Year” award and later adapted into a successful film.
